How I Registered a UK Company From Nigeria

I run WINNZ DIGITALHUB LIMITED, a UK-registered private company, from Nigeria. I'm not based in the UK, I've never lived there, and I registered the whole thing myself without a lawyer. Here's the honest version of how that actually went — not the polished version.

Why I did this at all

A UK company gave me something a Nigerian business registration alone couldn't: easier access to global payment processors like Stripe and PayPal, and more credibility when applying to programs like TikTok Shop's Partner Center. Those platforms review your business documents, and a properly incorporated company carries real weight.

The part that actually went smoothly

Registering the company itself was fast. I used a UK company formation agent, since they provide the registered office address every UK company legally needs — even if you don't live there. Within a day, I had my Certificate of Incorporation.

The part that didn't

Two separate rejections taught me more than anything I read beforehand.

The first: I submitted the wrong document to a platform that specifically asked for my "Certificate of Incorporation." My formation agent had bundled several documents into one file, and I sent the whole thing instead of just the certificate page. Simple mistake, real delay.

The second was more frustrating: my passport has a middle name. The company registration form only had fields for first and last name. When a platform cross-checked my passport against my company's director record, the names didn't match — and I got flagged for identity verification.

What it actually costs

People assume a UK company is expensive to set up from outside the UK. It's not, if you know what you're paying for. The formation agent fee covers your Certificate of Incorporation and your registered office address (the legally required UK address, since you don't live there). Beyond that, expect a small annual renewal fee to keep that registered address active — this is the ongoing cost most people don't budget for, since it's not a one-time thing. There's also your annual Confirmation Statement filing with Companies House, which has its own small fee. None of it compares to what a solicitor would charge to do this for you — the real cost isn't the registration, it's the time you'll spend on verification afterward.

How long the whole process really takes

The incorporation itself is fast — I had my certificate within a day. What takes longer is everything after: getting approved on Stripe and PayPal as a non-resident director, and getting through platform reviews like TikTok Shop's Partner Center. Budget days to weeks for those, not hours — especially if (like me) you hit a document mismatch and have to correct something with the registrar first. Don't judge your progress by how fast the company itself gets registered; judge it by how smoothly the verification steps go.
